Land's End to John o' Groats
1000 Miles for Macmillan and Dignity in Dying
Welcome
As the country celebrates the Queen’s Jubilee, we’re cycling the UK from toe to top, starting in Land’s End and finishing at John O’ Groats.
We are Suzanne, Susanna, Alan, Christine & Richard and we’re doing this in memory of Suzanne’s husband, Simon. Simon died last year from Multiple System Atrophy, (MSA) a rare neurological disease. It locked him inside his body, robbing him of every physical and autonomic ability — walking, talking, eating — leaving his mind intact but unable to act.
Simon received excellent palliative care, enabling him to remain at home, looked after by people who loved him. A few weeks before he died, his communication reduced to blinks, he said he didn't want to die in pain.
- Even if that means shortening your conscious life?
- Yes, he blinked.
The medical team did all they could, but it wasn’t enough. Simon died in pain and distress.

So we're cycling to raise funds and support for Dignity in Dying and their campaign to legalise assisted dying for terminally ill, mentally competent adults. We’re also fundraising for Midhurst Macmillan Palliative Care, who provide essential support, emotional as well as practical.
We're all in our fifties and till now, would have considered a ten mile bike ride, good going. The last few months we've pushed each other to breaking point, cycled up hills that seemed never ending, and over distances surely intended for cars. We're more saddle sore than we ever imagined but our fundraising goals keep us going.

For everyone who has wished us well or helped with our fundraising, a thousand thank yous. And if you’d like to track our progress, we’ll be updating our blog of the trip daily.
